Symyx Notebook Connects the Electronic Lab

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 7, 2010 – Symyx Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMMX) today announced new Symyx Notebook integrations with Thermo Scientific Atlas CDS (chromatography data system), Waters’ Empowerâ„¢ CDS, Agilent OpenLAB ECM (enterprise content manager), and the Work Request and Metrology components of the Symyx Lab Operations suite of products.

The new integrations enable scientists to capture, manage, and share structured and unstructured information generated by software applications and lab instrumentation used across multiple scientific disciplines. By supporting this interoperability between laboratory information and work processes, Symyx Notebook improves the efficiency of laboratory operations in the life sciences, chemicals, energy, and consumer products industries.

“The ability to push sample information and methods from Symyx Notebook to a variety of instruments and then pull the data from the instruments back into the notebook is critical in today’s convergent lab environment,” said Dr. Trevor Heritage, president of Symyx’s software business unit. “Integrating Symyx Notebook with the systems scientists use every day optimizes the flow of information and other processes, enabling multidisciplinary teams to move projects from research through development to production more quickly and cost-effectively.”

Building on previous successful integrations with Thermo Scientific Watson LIMS (laboratory information management system) and Waters’ NuGenesis® SDMS (scientific data management system), Symyx Notebook now also supports two-way integration with Thermo Scientific Atlas CDS. With this integration, scientists can document, manage, process, report, and track liquid and gas chromatography experiments more efficiently without leaving the Notebook interface.

“This solution benefits the market by providing a truly integrated solution,” explained Dave Champagne, vice president and general manager, Informatics at Thermo Fisher Scientific. “By integrating Symyx Notebook to Atlas CDS, we provide an integrated LIMS-CDS-ELN solution. This enables both an efficient laboratory process and the flow of information from the laboratory to the rest of the organization, allowing management to have the information they need to drive critical business objectives.”

In addition, Symyx Notebook now also connects with:

  • Waters Empowerâ„¢ CDS — Save time and work more efficiently by defining samples within Symyx Notebook and pulling related chromatography data back from Empower without leaving the Notebook.
  • Agilent OpenLAB ECM — Improve project team collaboration by linking Symyx Notebook to the OpenLAB information repository, enabling scientists to easily connect raw data and results from a variety of laboratory instruments with Notebook experiments.
  • Symyx Work Request — Route tasks, samples, and results to colleagues directly from Symyx Notebook, streamlining laboratory processes, eliminating workflow bottlenecks, reducing cycle times, and improving project team communication.
  • Symyx Metrology — View calibration information for laboratory equipment and update instrument calibration directly within Symyx Notebook, improving and accelerating efficient, accurate data collection and eliminating the need for paper logbooks.
