Sysmex America Designs Optimized Software for Blood Donor Centers

Departing from the “all or nothing” philosophy of typical hematology analyzer reporting, Sysmex America has designed an optional software package for use on their pocH-100i hematology analyzer that meets the desired informational needs for blood donor centers, according to John Kershaw, President, Sysmex America. Because the primary goals of blood component therapy involve the treatment of anemia and/or the replacement of platelets, the new pocH-100i software allows selective reporting of individual parameters. Typically, blood donor centers will measure hematocrit values and platelet counts, with hemoglobin levels, if necessary.

Placed in hundreds of laboratories worldwide, the standard software on the pocH-100i analyzer is designed to report a complete CBC and 3-part WBC differential. “While all of these parameters are appropriate in a diagnostic setting, they are not used for blood donor assessment,” said Peggy Barranco, Product Manager. “We are interested in the donor’s ability to provide platelet packs – even multiple packs from a single donor during a single visit. If the donor does not have a high enough platelet count to do this, they may still be able to qualify for donation of packed red cells or whole blood. The pocH-100i provides accurate results by evaluating donors to maximize the benefit of their precious donation.” The software is also capable of reporting the results via a transmission to a remote site for result review, and captures the identification of the operator, if desired.

This new software package makes the use of the pocH-100i in donation centers a perfect complement to the Sysmex XE-2100Dâ„¢, which is used at blood processing centers. Sysmex America announced last week that it had received a contract to supply its pocH-100i and Sysmex XE-2100D hematology analyzers to a major U.S. blood processing cooperative, with sites across the country. The Sysmex pocH-100i Automated Hematology Analyzer, like the Sysmex XE-2100D, is an automated cell counter intended for in vitro diagnostics use in a CLIA non-waived clinical laboratory (not for Point of Care use in a CLIA waived laboratory.)

In the diagnostic setting, the pocH-100i provides a quick turnaround of results, while the patient is still in the physician’s office, to facilitate treatment decisions on the spot – a convenience for the patient, the physicians and the office staff.

Regardless of the setting in which the pocH-100i is used, a new quality control program uses bar coded entry of control and reagent parameters to simplify quality control procedures while reducing manual error entry.
