The Biomedical Proteomic Research Group At The Geneva University Faculty Of Medicine Chooses Applied Biosystems For Its LIMS Implementation
The Biomedical Proteomic Research Group (BPRG) at the Geneva University Faculty of Medicine, in collaboration with the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB), has recently completed the implementation of a new LIMS, part of the Informatics Software and Services for Discovery program from Applied Biosystems. Senior Scientist, Pierre-Alain Binz, explained: “Prior to the LIMS implementation, we had a small number of sample tracking systems in the laboratory that dealt with only small parts of the workflow. We needed a more formal and focused way of handling the data being generated in the laboratory.”
“The generic structure of the new LIMS has been especially important, because we needed a system that worked well with modular workloads and could handle data from variable sources. The system needed to be able to store all the different and complex types of information generated in the proteomics laboratory, track the workflows, anticipate the next steps in the workflows and perform batch runs. All this, in addition to generating reports and performing complex queries on the data.”
Pierre-Alain concluded: “There has been continuous development over the last two years to coordinate all of these requirements within the LIMS system and it is now stable and ready to be used at the production level. Since the installation of a 4700 Proteomics Analyzer this is more important than ever. This instrument has the potential to generate a huge amount of data and we now have a LIMS that can acquire and handle this volume of data when necessary.”
