Thermo Fisher Scientific Announces Significant Darwin LIMS Installation at Brazilian Pharmaceutical Powerhouse, Eurofarma

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. (December 5, 2008) Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, announced that its Thermo Scientific Darwin LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System), specifically designed for pharmaceutical manufacturing and R&D, has been installed and fully validated at pharmaceutical powerhouse Eurofarma.  Eurofarma is the third-largest pharmaceutical company in Brazil specializing in the manufacture of drugs for human and veterinary use.  The project also includes the installation of Thermo Scientific Atlas CDST, the enterprise-level chromatography data system and a critical component of any pharmaceutical company’s enterprise integration strategy.

This new Darwin LIMS installation in South America is another example of Thermo Fisher’s state-of-the art laboratory information management system designed for pharmaceutical laboratories that want greater control and insight of their data, while reducing the total cost of ownership of their LIMS investment. Eurofarma provides a complete line of products which cover several pathologies, acting both in the fight and prevention of a number of critical diseases. Thermo Scientific Darwin LIMST was selected by Eurofarma to standardize processes across its multi-laboratory infrastructure, automate operations and consolidate data management in a single LIMS across its manufacturing facilities in Brazil. The installation of Darwin LIMS will help contain costs and improve efficiencies as Eurofarma continues to grow in South America’s increasingly competitive pharmaceutical environment.

“We are delighted to work with Eurofarma on this LIMS and CDS project, which will further improve their productivity and quality output. This new relationship also enables us to grow in the Latin American region and offer these same benefits to our other pharmaceutical customers in the region, facing similar challenges,” said Dave Champagne, vice president and general manager, Informatics, Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Founded in 1972, Eurofarma began as a Contract Manufacturing Organization (CMO) manufacturing drugs for third parties, national and international laboratories. With Eurofarma’s success came an increase in market perception, enhanced production capacity, strategic emphasis on improving equipment technology and the adoption of strict quality control methodologies. Eurofarma has grown to its current organization, which produces and markets generic drugs under its own proprietary brand names and under a multinational licensing agreement, and has acquired new companies, setting the stage for the company’s recent installation of Thermo Scientific Darwin LIMS to automate production processes and improve productivity.

Osvaldo Orellana, QA/QC Director at Eurofarma said, “Eurofarma has selected Darwin LIMS because it will increase the lab productivity while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. We expect Darwin LIMS also to accelerate our decision-making processes by improving internal communications, which will help facilitate our flexible approach to R&D activities while maintaining the rigid compliance requirements of our QC activities.”

Oliver Faidi, Director of Sales for Thermo Fisher’s Informatics business in Latin America, added, “Since our first conversations with Eurofarma we both understood that Darwin LIMS and Atlas CDS were the perfect solution to increasingly automate their processes and raise productivity while working under the most exigent quality regulations to drive down the total cost of their LIMS investment.”

Thermo Scientific Darwin LIMS is specifically designed to address the unique needs of pharmaceutical manufacturing R&D and QA/QC labs to help them meet FDA regulations, bring significant time savings in validation efforts, and create cost savings in personnel and production time. Darwin’s unique batch and product-oriented design aligns directly with pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, allowing R&D and production data to be logically organized, summarized and reported. Darwin LIMS also includes built-in, dashboard-ready functionality to allow pharmaceutical lab managers to make faster, more informed decisions. The Thermo Scientific Atlas chromatography data system controls hundreds of instruments from a variety of vendors in compliance with FDA regulations, including 21 CFR Part 11. Atlas was developed in partnership with leading chromatographers to easily configure to any laboratory’s workflow while providing the flexibility to integrate with LIMS and other enterprise-level data management systems for a scalable, compliant solution.
