Advanced workflows for life science research

Thermo Fisher continues to be on the leading edge of life sciences innovation, developing the technologies that scientists need in their search for new treatments and cures for disease. The latest example, the new Thermo Scientific LTQ Velos platform, is making its Analytica debut. The dramatic improvements in speed and sensitivity in the LTQ Velos™ enable more confident sequence assignment and post-translational modification (PTM) identification, effectively reinventing ion trap analysis. The LTQ Orbitrap™ Velos™ combines this increased sensitivity and improved cycle time with the proven mass accuracy and ultra-high resolution of the company’s ground-breaking Orbitrap mass analyzer to deliver high-performance mass spectrometry in a hybrid system.

Combining industry-leading mass-spectrometry instruments with advanced reagents and consumables enables researchers to improve the quality of their results and accelerate their work cycle. In support of this effort, Thermo Fisher is featuring a large array of new Thermo Scientific products at Analytica focused on protein expression, detection, preparation and purification. In particular, the Thermo Scientific Pierce In-Vitro Glycoprotein kit delivers two human-based cell-free systems available for either glycoprotein or protein synthesis. Pierce Human In Vitro Expression Kits produce the target glycoprotein in a single dominant form – a feature that is critical for downstream applications such as mass spectrometry analysis.

Industry-leading technologies for routine applications

Performance in more routine applications, such as food safety and environmental analysis, is defined by accuracy, durability and efficiency. These characteristics are exemplified by the company’s line-up of new Thermo Scientific chromatography instruments and consumables being showcased at Analytica. In GC-MS, the new Thermo Scientific ISQ single quadrupole gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system with the new ExtractaBrite™ ion source offers simplified operation and maximum uptime for uninterrupted productivity across routine GC-MS applications.

The new TSQ Quantum™ XLS GC-MS system features the innovative DuraBrite™ IRIS high-sensitivity ion source, offering increased sensitivity for quantitative GC triple quadrupole analyses. Combined with the new TraceGOLD columns, the instrument delivers industry-leading analytical performance.

The Thermo Scientific Accela 1250 liquid chromatography quaternary pump, also new at Analytica, dramatically improves separation for complex mixtures, such as red wine, resulting in improved speed and accuracy during ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography (U-HPLC) analysis. The Accela 1250™ features Force Feedback Control (FFC) and sets a new standard by eliminating the need for pulse dampening while maximizing flow accuracy and gradient precision under extreme operating conditions.

To meet the challenges of authentication in the food and beverage industry, Thermo Fisher is launching a new user-friendly isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) solution that offers fast, fully automated switching between multi-compound and multi-element analysis. This comprehensive solution is designed to enhance laboratory productivity, reliably identify the origin of food and beverage samples and detect counterfeit products. The system includes the Thermo Scientific DELTA V series IRMS and the ConFlo IV Universal Interface, combined with the TRACE GC Ultra and the new Flash HT Plus elemental analyzer, all in a single workflow for maximum efficiency. The combination delivers a simplified process requiring minimal sample preparation and handling and increases the level of laboratory automation.

Driving laboratory and enterprise productivity

In order to remain competitive in the current economic environment, customers in virtually every industry around the world are sharpening their focus on increasing productivity while continuing to improve quality and ensure safety. Thermo Fisher’s complete line of Thermo Scientific centrifuges on display at Analytica is designed to help customers achieve all of these goals.

Both the Thermo Scientific Heraeus Megafuge and the Heraeus Multifuge general purpose centrifuge series feature Auto-Lock® III rotor management to facilitate rotor exchange in less than 3 seconds, resulting in application versatility and cleaning convenience. Coupled with Thermo Scientific Fiberlite rotors, this centrifuge platform delivers higher G-force and faster speeds, while ensuring exceptional security and efficiency with the carbon fiber rotors’ lightweight, robust and corrosion-free design. Further design enhancements include the certified ClickSeal® bucket sealing system, providing a glove-friendly, one-handed open and close capability, and SMARTSpin® technology to maximize run performance and reproducibility. From benchtop instruments to advanced floor models, from innovative carbon fiber rotors to Thermo Scientific Nalgene and Nunc tubes and bottles, Thermo Fisher Scientific provides centrifuge solutions that are seamlessly compatible and can truly drive research forward.

Advancements that enable productivity in the lab don’t end with instruments or consumables. Experts recognize the importance of an integrated software system that connects all aspects of lab operations. For 2010, Thermo Fisher has announced a significant innovation in its suite of laboratory information management systems (LIMS) software. The new Web-based Thermo Scientific LIMS-on-Demand™ offers flexibility and ease-of-use, helping organizations replace inefficient, error-prone manual processes with an automated data management solution. Customers can create workflows, map sample lifecycles and generate automatic updates from any standard Internet connection while providing users with rapid access to up-to-the-minute data and information.

Fast and accurate analysis in the field

Innovation is also critical outside of the laboratory. The need for accurate and rapid identification in the field is the basis for the Thermo Scientific line of handheld analyzers. Thermo Fisher Scientific is recognized worldwide for its technologically advanced selection of handheld X-ray based analyzers. Providing laboratory-quality results in a portable instrument allows researchers and technicians to analyze and identify a variety of substances using proven effective techniques. Thermo Fisher Scientific recently completed the acquisition of a leading provider of handheld chemical analyzers, Ahura Scientific, expanding the Thermo Scientific portfolio of handheld analyzers to include non-destructive, field-based identification of solid and liquid chemicals. Using Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy technologies in a portable, rugged and easy-to-use form, these chemical and explosives identification products are deployed worldwide by military organizations, law enforcement agencies, hazmat teams and pharmaceutical companies.
