Tripos Announces New Benchware Products Including Electronic Laboratory Notebook

Tripos, Inc. (Nasdaq:TRPS), a leading provider of drug discovery informatics products and chemistry research, announced the availability of two new products within its recently launched Benchware(R) line of laboratory informatics software. Benchware Notebook 2.0, an enterprise electronic laboratory notebook (ELN), and Benchware Dock 1.0, an application enabling laboratory chemists to perform iterative, real-time virtual-screening analyses, will be introduced today at the Drug Discovery Technology(R) & Development World Congress in Boston.

Benchware Notebook

Benchware Notebook is a customer-proven, enterprise ELN that is already in use by hundreds of discovery scientists. Developed in collaboration with and based on the requirements of laboratory scientists in global drug discovery organizations, Benchware Notebook supports discovery operations at large, multisite pharmaceutical research organizations as well as small, single-site biotechnology companies. Among its many end-user features, Benchware Notebook provides an open, Web-service-based architecture that is designed to integrate with existing enterprise systems, including Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), compound registration and inventory tracking systems, to support seamless user workflows.

“Benchware Notebook greatly enhances the way experiments are planned, captured, managed and shared at Schering AG,” said Dr. Rolf Jautelat, scientist in medicinal chemistry at Schering AG in Germany. “Using this innovative tool makes it very easy for me to collaborate with colleagues all over the world and to draw inspiration from the collective scientific works of the organization.”

“The discovery informatics market is moving away from standalone applications toward integrated solution suites to improve program team collaboration and innovation,” said Michael Elliott, president of Atrium Research & Consulting, a leading market research firm focused on the growing ELN market. “By developing a solution built specifically with usability and system integration in mind, Tripos has demonstrated it is listening to the needs of chemists, IT professionals and R&D management. Benchware Notebook will help to accelerate the movement from monolithic ELNs to open and modular collaborative environments that address the needs of the end users while protecting valuable intellectual property.”

Benchware Dock

Benchware Dock enables laboratory chemists to rapidly test compound ideas, before synthesis, against 3-D models of target protein structures using docking calculations previously defined by molecular-modeling specialists. Another Tripos product based on a Service-Oriented Informatics fabric, Benchware Dock allows scientists to perform real-time docking studies and to extract knowledge of compound-target compatibility in minutes, dramatically reducing the iterative design cycles of compound modification, redocking and review that is typical of many drug discovery programs.

“Benchware Dock challenges the usual, inefficient way in which discovery organizations approach receptor-based drug design projects,” said Dr. David Lowis, senior director of product management at Tripos. “Computational chemists still develop, publish and validate docking procedures as they always have, but using Benchware Dock this knowledge can now be published and made immediately available to chemists who can test, review and retest their compound ideas against target protein structures in minutes instead of days or weeks.”

About Benchware

Tripos developed Benchware in direct response to customer demand for more intuitive and scientifically robust predictive chemistry, scientific planning and collaboration applications designed for laboratory scientists. Benchware applications are used by laboratory researchers to support chemical synthesis and testing decisions; digitally store, search and retrieve research information; and share experimental results with project team members, including computational scientists.
