Tripos Embraces Service-Oriented Informatics

Tripos, Inc., a leading provider of drug discovery chemistry and informatics products and services, has announced its plan to embrace web services as an integral component of its Discovery Informatics software architecture and product development strategy. The company’s support of Service-Oriented Informatics (SOI) will ultimately provide its customers with more flexible options for developing, deploying and accessing core discovery informatics technologies and applications.

“The industry standard for discovery informatics software architecture in pharmaceutical R&D is changing,” said Bryan Koontz, senior vice president and general manager of Discovery Informatics at Tripos. “The workstation-centric platform that has served the industry well for many years is still important. But more loosely coupled, server-centric architectures with software deployed as flexible web services that can adapt to each company’s unique discovery workflows are critical for improving the agility and productivity of cross-functional research teams.”

Tripos’ web services initiative is an answer to increasing demand from researchers in pharmaceutical, biotechnology and agrochemical discovery organizations for improved flexibility, process efficiency and return on investment from technology that historically has been restricted to small groups of specialized users.

Next month, Tripos will announce the release of its first laboratory informatics product based on its SOI framework. This solution uses web services to improve collaboration and the sharing of virtual screening information between specialized teams in pharmaceutical and biotechnology discovery organizations.

Over the coming year, Tripos will continue to release new SOI-based solutions, including the following:

  • Tripos Application Server, an open-standards-based (Apache Tomcat, JBoss, Apache Axis) application server providing access to Tripos and third-party discovery informatics web services
  • Tripos Informatics Web Services Toolkit, a collection of web service wrappers for key Tripos Discovery Informatics products and for leading workflow and grid computing applications

With these new SOI-based solutions, researchers will have the option of accessing important Tripos Discovery Informatics applications such as Concord® and Confort(TM) as flexible, server-centric, SOAP-based web services in addition to accessing such applications solely through the SYBYL® workstation environment.
