Tripos Releases Benchware Notebook 2.1; New Version Features Significant Usability Enhancements and Service-Oriented Architecture Upgrades to Help Customers Better Manage Integration, Customization and Deployment Costs

Tripos, Inc., a leading provider of drug discovery informatics products and chemistry research, today announced the release of Benchware(R) Notebook 2.1, the newest version of its enterprise electronic laboratory notebook (ELN). Benchware Notebook supports research operations by providing a familiar user interface and a service-oriented architecture that is designed to minimize customer costs over the lifetime of the system.

Benchware Notebook is built on a modular and open plug-in framework and can be easily interfaced with other enterprise systems, such as LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems) and compound registration systems, thus saving time and money compared with costly customization work. Using the supplied Software Development Kit, research IT groups can rapidly code user enhancements, add new data sources, and link with new research applications without recompiling and redeploying Benchware Notebook’s core product code.

“The total cost of any electronic laboratory notebook solution includes more than just license costs,” said Jonathan Feldmann, product manager at Tripos. “It includes the cost of deployment, customization, integration, training and ongoing user enhancements. Benchware Notebook was designed from the beginning to address these complexities and to yield the highest user benefit with the lowest total cost of ownership of any ELN on the market.”

In addition to bolstered integration architecture, the new version of Benchware Notebook also contains a number of usability enhancements requested by users and participants in Tripos’ user-centered design program. These enhancements include a new page navigation toolbar, which allows users to more quickly and easily arrive at conclusions. Also included is increased support for third-party chemical sketching applications, allowing scientists to effectively use their choice of chemical drawing programs within the Benchware Notebook environment.

“Now that ELNs are becoming more widely accepted, it is clear that users want applications that reflect the way they work,” said Phil Simmons, product marketing manager at Tripos. “By taking a user-centered approach to the design of Benchware Notebook, we built a user interface that conforms to scientists’ workflow and gives them an environment that they are already familiar with. This holistic approach to product design leads to greater user adoption and greater return on investment for research management and corporate IT departments.”

Those wanting a demonstration of key Benchware Notebook functionality, and to hear about planned enhancements to future versions of Benchware Notebook, should register to view the recorded webcast, “Benchware Notebook: A True Enterprise-Class ELN,” at http://www.tripos.com/eln.
