University of Pennsylvania Health System to Deploy Eclipsys Clinical IT Solution in Nation’s First Hospital

Eclipsys Corporation(R), The Outcomes Company(R), (NASDAQ:ECLP), today announced that the prestigious University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) will deploy Eclipsys’ Sunrise(TM) Clinical Manager XA(TM) with Critical Care in Pennsylvania Hospital — one of the health system’s three teaching hospitals. Established more than 250 years ago, Pennsylvania Hospital was the first hospital in the nation.

The deployment of this solution at Pennsylvania Hospital will build on UPHS’ successful house-wide activations of Sunrise Clinical Manager earlier this year at its two other hospitals — the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and Presbyterian Medical Center. “We are very pleased with the successful activations of the advanced software solution at HUP and Presbyterian Medical Center,” said Dr. Eric Pifer, director of Medical Informatics for UPHS. “The addition of Clinical Manager at Pennsylvania Hospital will help us provide an even greater level of patient safety and coordination of medical practice across our more than 1,600-bed health system.”

As with HUP and Presbyterian, Eclipsys will remote host Sunrise Clinical Manager XA with Critical Care for Pennsylvania Hospital from Eclipsys’ Technology Solutions Center located in Mountain Lakes, NJ.

Well-positioned for national EHR

UPHS intends to move Pennsylvania Hospital and its sister facilities closer to the ultimate goal of becoming paperless hospitals. George Brenckle, UPHS’ chief information officer, stated, “In keeping with the focus of the federal government’s ‘Decade of Health Information Technology’ initiative, we’re working toward full implementation of a UPHS electronic health record. The unified database that we’re deploying across these three facilities will help us in fulfilling the government’s objective of providing EHRs for most Americans within the decade.”

Co-founded in 1751 by Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond, Pennsylvania Hospital today provides a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic medical services. It also functions as a major teaching and clinical research institution. Pennsylvania Hospital is ranked as one of the nation’s top 10 hospitals by the American Association of Retired Persons’ AARP The Magazine.

’21st century solution’

“As the nation’s first hospital, we have an extensive tradition of innovation and excellence,” said Kate Kinslow, chief operating officer for Pennsylvania Hospital. “Eclipsys’ advanced clinical software has been very well-received at HUP and Presbyterian, so we welcome this opportunity to leverage its industry-leading order entry and clinical documentation capabilities to improve caregiver efficiency, patient safety and satisfaction at our facility.”

“Eclipsys is extremely pleased to expand our close working relationship with UPHS,” said Paul L. Ruflin, Eclipsys president and CEO. “We are honored to have our advanced clinical software solution used by the nation’s first hospital. It may be over 250 years since Pennsylvania Hospital was founded, but its commitment to excellence in patient care hasn’t changed — just the delivery methods have.”
