Werum and S.E.A. Present Wind Tunnel Control System

Werum Software & Systems and S.E.A. Datentechnik have developed an open control system for wind tunnels. This wind tunnel control system is called WTCS and comprises functions for test sequencing and control as well as for data acquisition, data analysis and archiving.

WTCS forms the basis for control systems that have to meet the most different requirements in aerodynamic, climatic or supersonic wind tunnels. The system is suitable for modernizing wind tunnels with different submodules and measurement systems as well as for designing and installing open and versatile control systems for new wind tunnels.

The WTCS test and configuration data management functions guarantee a high degree of flexibility. Basic configurations are established by defining standard tasks. Thus, the wind tunnel can rapidly be adapted to new jobs with just minor modifications This way the wind tunnel’s productive utilization time is increased.

WTCS is a scalable system. This applies to the hardware components for measuring technology and computer infrastructure as well as to the software components with powerful client/server applications and multi-user capability. The modular WTCS architecture enables subsequent expansions without the need of structural modifications. A plug-in concept facilitates the linking of external hardware and software components. Subsystem modules ensure the integration of individual subsystems and measuring systems.

The suitable modules are simply selected and thus components supplied by different manufacturers are connected without any change of the overall system. Communication between control system and subsystems is provided by a Value Pool, which is a central component for data exchange between application, subsystems, and dialogs. Due to this concept it is possible to integrate intelligent subsystems as well as simple devices into an overall system.

Irrespective of the provider, subsystems and measuring equipment are interfaced based on a hardware abstraction concept. This enables the integration even of exotic measuring systems and equipment. WTCS supports direct analog and digital measuring hardware as well as industrial bus systems, PROFIBUS, InterBus or CANBus.

WTCS has proven successful in practical applications at Toyota Motorsport’s and Audi’s.
