June 1, 2007 - TWiT.tv!

Welcome to TWiT.tv! If you've stumbled upon this page and are wondering what it's all about, read on. The TWiT.tv Story It all started in 1998 with a small cable network called ZDTV, a channel dedicated to covering computers, the Internet, and personal technology. The people behind this site all worked on that network as hosts, reporters, or producers. In 2004, ZDTV, then called TechTV, was sold and dismantled. Former TechTV hosts, Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Kevin Rose, and John C. Dvorak, and producers Robert Heron, David Prager, and Roger Chang went on to other jobs, but we stayed in touch, with each other, and with fans of the late TechTV. Those fans told us again and again how important TechTV had been in their lives, and how much they missed the channel. We missed working with each other, too. On a rainy evening in January, 2005 a few of of us got together for dinner after spending the day covering MacWorld Expo in San Francisco. Leo, who was working as a radio host, happened to have a microphone and recorder. He turned it on and recorded 20 minutes of idle chatter about the Expo and the tech world in general. He posted that recording on his web site. Within a few days tens of thousands of people had downloaded the recording. TechTV fans began clamoring for more. A few months later, TWiT was born.

May 28, 2007 - The Motley Fool thinks Web Browser Based LIMS is a good idea!

The Motley Fool - Educate, Amuse, and EnrichPerhaps you have never heard of the Motley Fool???  Well it is both a newspaper column and a web site that covers personal financial issues and investments.  The nice thing about the Fool is that it provides a humorous look at financial matters but also provides a pragmatic look at money and investments.  Today I read the Motley Fool and they were talking about the recent StarLIMS IPO.  You can read the full story here.

May 12, 2007 - 10 Elements of the ideal LIMS

Just like all of the rest of creation, an ideal Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is  made up of some essential elements. The LIMS of today is really a full enterprise management system, not just the sample tracking application of yesteryear. Accordingly, it must be made up of all of the right elements so that it provides your laboratory alchemists with gold, not lead..

May 7, 2007 - XML Reporting in SQL*LIMS

For several years my boss, Brian, has been telling me that the perfect solution for a LIMS Certificate of Analysis report would use a solid data extraction algorithm and a flexible XML output. The idea has always sounded interesting to me, except for the fact that the SQL*LIMS product doesn’t include the technology to do such a thing…until now. Today’s article describes how to customize SQL*LIMS and Oracle Reports to send data to XML, and how to convert that XML output to PDF.

May 1, 2007 - Statistical Quality Control for the Food Industry

In reviewing this book on Google recently, I found it to have a number of good concepts to incorporate into LIMS for the F&B industry. Given the current news on food contamination (on purpose, I might add), none of these concepts will help protect our food supply if food ingredients are going to consist of plastic (melamine). Statistical Quality Control can let you have a better quality process for killing pets! Excuse my attitude concerning this but something must change in the food industry.

April 29, 2007 - Help Save Internet Radio – It is in grave danger!

The SaveNetRadio Coalition

The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger.  Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on May 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). If the increased rates remain unchanged, the majority of webcasters will go bankrupt and silent on this date.  Internet radio needs your help! H.R. 2060, The Internet Radio Equality Act was introduced by Representatives Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Donald Manzullo (R-IL ) to save the Internet radio industry. Please call your congressperson to ask them to co-sponsor H.R. 2060 by clicking below.

March 12, 2007 - Diet LIMS for Small Labs

“Small is beautiful” is a popular quote. But did you know that being small in business is double jeopardy? Of course, most of us know. Being small in the laboratory business is no different. There is always threat from the large competing labs. The larger labs constantly push their smaller rivals with velocities sufficient enough to drive them out from the realms of profitability and eventually, even beyond the threshold of existence.

March 11, 2007 - Data Migration

As the IT industry matures, companies are starting to realize the benefits of having a standardized approach to IT. This includes the use of common applications within a business sector. These applications can be a new application entirely for the company or an upgrade of one of a number of existing products in place. When a company decides to go down the path of standardization there are a number of things that need to be considered. One of the most important issues that a company needs to consider is the question of what to do with legacy data. Depending on the type of application, legacy data may or may not be required. In the LIMS world, foreseeable situations exist where the answer to the legacy data question is both! The question is then – migrate the data to the new system or warehouse the data? I will explain some of the considerations that should come into play when making this decision.

February 25, 2007 - Which LIMS implementation process is right for you?

Laboratories not only have different functional needs that their LIMS solution must meet but they also have system implementation needs that can have a profound affect on the success of the LIMS implementation.

Even if you succeed in choosing the right LIMS for your lab, the implementation process can make the difference between success and failure.  There are basically 3 types of implementation processes (Packaged, Collaborative, Turn-key).  Let’s rank them from the least expensive to the most expensive processes.
