No specimen left behind: Industrial scale digitization of natural history collections
In this 2012 journal article from ZooKeys, Blagoderov and his colleagues from the Natural History Museum in London describe the process they went through to improve the mass-digitization of their numerous collections. Noting problems with cost, "as well as the inherent fragmentation in collection based biodiversity informatics," the researchers created a "wall-to-wall" process using the SatScan tray scanning system. The group suggested that such a system could, when implemented well, "open up collections to the world, facilitating their use, and help create a global collection index that can be used to set priorities for further digitization."
MaPSeq, a service-oriented architecture for genomics research within an academic biomedical research institution
Reilly et al. at the University of North Carolina needed a specific solution for their genomics research, a solution that would "address the organizational challenges of computation-intensive biomedical research within a decentralized academic institution." After reviewing numerous options, the team decided to create their own system, MaPSeq, an application built on service-oriented architecture. In this paper summing up their development and implementation process, the group concludes that while the software is useful for massively parallel sequencing, "the general architecture and approach can be adapted for other complex or computationally-intense workflows."
HIPAA Compliance Is Not Enough to Curtail PHI Data Breaches, Says FairWarning CEO at HIMSS’16
Speaking at HIMSS’16, FairWarning, Inc.’s CEO, Kurt J. Long, called on care providers to secure and protect their applications that hold the “crown jewels” of their patient information, citing that HIPAA compliance is not enough to protect patient health information and curtail data breaches.
The Legacy LIMS Folly
Many laboratories face this same issue. A dated, legacy LIMS exist. It lacks needed capabilities. It cannot be remotely accessed. No client portal exists. It does not integrate with all of the newer instruments. It cannot produce new, needed reports. It cannot effectively update QC reports. Its query functions are extremely limited. It is failing under the higher workload. It cannot operate on the “new” computers. Yet, it, that old LIMS, is vital to the day to day operation of the laboratory. “If we could just get by this one more year… We’ll replace it next year!” And that has been said for five years straight.
