Tamrisk United Church is a small, wooden structure, erected in 1907, located in the Grandview Municipality, which is part of the Parkland Region in Manitoba, Canada. The Church also has an adjacent cemetery, located to the east of the church structure. It is currently owned by the Grandview Municipality.

History[1]

Although the Tamrisk Church was not yet erected, the first worships were held, starting in 1891 in a small home nearby. Shortly after, local pioneers of the area had their first congregation, and the nearby Tamrisk School was built in 1895 which was used for services.

The first church official church was a former log home, purchased in 1901, and was set on a different location. Shortly after, land was donated and a deed was drawn under the name of Tamrisk Methodist Church, and was deeded to the heirs of the founders forever. In the fall of 1907, the church was officially open. The original church was made of cement blocks, but after a few years, the structure was found unsafe, and was replaced with wood siding.

In 1917, a parsonage was built on three acres of land, located to the west of the church (this property was later sold in 1946 to a private owner for $150, which was used for church upgrades, such as repairing the church pipe organ and painting the exterior, as well as adding a cement step.)

Over the years, several ministers from different denominations, such as Methodist, Presbyterian and Lutheran. The Mennonite community used the church, as well, when they first came to the area. It became a United Church following the 1925 unification of the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregationalist faiths.

Sometime before 1920, the trustees purchased the land, located to the east of the church, for a cemetery, which is currently there.

Historical Designation

On October 24, 1989, Honorable Bonnie Mitchelson, Minister of Culture, Heritage and Recreation, designated the current Tamrisk Church as a Manitoba Provincial Heritage Site No. 46.

On July 31st, 1994, a A plaque beside the church was unveiled by the Manitoba Heritage Council[2]
