STARLIMS Enhances Traceability at California Animal Health and Food Safety Labs

STARLIMS Corporation, a leading global provider of Laboratory Information Management Systems, (LIMS),  announced that STARLIMS will be supporting the goal of the California Animal Health and Food Safety Labs (CAHFS) at the University of California, Davis, of supplying the State of California with quality diagnostic laboratory assistance through implementation of a new LIMS system.

The STARLIMS implementation at CAHFS will cover 200 users across 5 different sites.  The implementation will include workflow automation for some 450 tests that are performed within CAHFS and guarantee the capability for up to 150 test assignments outside the laboratories. The new LIMS system will address key IT needs with standards based messaging (PHIN-MS, HL7) and adequate standardization of data (LOINC, SNOMED).

“CAHFS selected STARLIMS because of its adaptability to operate in complex multi-species, multi-discipline environments,” said Jay Ross, IT Manager at CAHFS, UC Davis.  “STARLIMS fulfills our automation requirements, enables bar-coding and provides flexibility in the overall system architecture.  It also comprises integrated messaging capabilities and instrument integration features.  We project significant efficiencies to be gained throughout our organization by using STARLIMS.”

The selection of STARLIMS for full deployment throughout CAHFS follows the experience gained by the two organizations during the initial implementation of STARLIMS at CAHFS aimed at automating sample analysis of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). The BSE project took place in June 2004, and introduced rapid solutions for data integration using XML and comprehensive barcode technologies, all of which have been handled seamlessly by STARLIMS.

“We are pleased to expand our relationship with CAHFS. This new enterprise wide deployment of STARLIMS will leverage our past success and existing joint project team to fully meet the institutions goals for automation and standardization,” commented Jeff Ferguson, Chief Operating Officer at STARLIMS Corporation.
