Thermo Electron Announces New Solutions at PITTCON 2005

Thermo Electron Corporation, the world leader in analytical instruments, today unveiled its new 2005 laboratory solutions at the Pittsburgh Conference (PITTCON), one of the largest conferences and expositions on laboratory science and instrumentation worldwide, being held this year in Orlando, Florida. This year, Thermo is showcasing a number of total solutions to help in areas of drug discovery research and pharmaceutical manufacturing, in addition to announcing major technology breakthroughs in mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, electrochemistry and informatics.

Within the past 12 months, Thermo completed a number of strategic acquisitions, including Jouan, USCS, InnaPhase, and the recently announced agreement to acquire Kendro Laboratory Products to augment offerings of laboratory equipment, software and services. Thermo also continues its heritage of customer-focused technical innovation, and recently opened a new Center for Excellence for mass spectrometry in Bremen, Germany.

“Thermo has focused intensely on making acquisitions that complement our broad product portfolio. This strategy, combined with an aggressive company-wide R&D program, means Thermo is helping to solve the complex challenges customers are facing in their specific applications,” said Marijn E. Dekkers, president and chief executive officer of Thermo Electron. “Attendees at PITTCON 2005 will see how the world’s leading analytical instruments company is bringing integrated solutions to customers under a single Thermo brand.”

View the complete list of Thermo product offerings being demonstrated and news being announced at PITTCON 2005. Among the solutions Thermo will be highlighting are:

  • The first turn-key ADME/Tox (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion and Toxicology) solution on the market. The LeadStream ADME/Tox SolutionTM addresses today’s drug discovery challenges by dramatically increasing the availability of early ADME/Tox data and accelerating early-stage drug compound assessment. With LeadStream, Thermo is enabling scientists to generate preclinical profiling results in a shorter time-scale, reducing time-to-market and demonstrating the company’s continued dedication to customer-driven innovation.
  • Darwin, the latest in commercial-off-the-shelf laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for pharmaceutical development and quality control. As the pharmaceutical industry continues to be challenged with ever-increasing regulatory pressures, constant cost controls and increased need for efficiency, Darwin LIMS is groundbreaking because the software provides users with a significantly higher level of pharmaceutical functionality out-of-the-box. Darwin shortens the implementation time, lessens validation cost, minimizes challenges of upgrading and lowers the total cost of ownership for customers.
  • The Orion Star Series line of meters, accessories and solutions for electrochemistry measurement. Reinforcing Thermo Electron’s commitment to the advancement of electrochemistry, this latest addition to Thermo’s product portfolio offers multiple configurations and highly sensitive electrodes designed for applications in the environmental, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, consumer products and general laboratories markets.
  • The Nicoletâ„¢ 380, a new, reliable spectrometer ideal for routine FT-IR analysis in QA/QC, industrial and academic laboratories that is able to quickly identify, quantify and verify samples. The Nicolet 380 uses complete system integration, plug-and-play sampling and computer-based expertise to guide the user through the experiment. The design of the Nicolet 380 allows users to achieve a wavelength precision of better than 0.01 cm-1 without using mathematical factors that alter data and are difficult to explain in a standard operating procedure (SOP).

Marc Casper, president of Thermo Electron’s Life and Laboratory Sciences segment said, “It is an exciting time in Thermo’s evolution to be able to unveil solutions that leverage our R&D and demonstrate our application skills. In turn, our customers are able to leverage these solutions to bring drugs to market faster, to manufacture products more efficiently and safely, and to keep our environment cleaner. As the needs of our customers have evolved, so has Thermo as a company, and we are confident that what we are showing at PITTCON 2005 clearly demonstrates the unique value we bring to the market as the world leader in analytical instruments.”

To demonstrate Thermo’s depth of knowledge and expertise, as well as to showcase the latest advancements in integrated tools, technologies and total solutions, the company will host a series of application-specific presentations at the Thermo booth #2917 (see booth map). The areas of focus will include:

  • A New Era in Quantitative Proteomics: This presentation will cover the methods and technologies available for the low-cost, fast and accurate quantitation of proteins in complex samples.
  • Empowering the ADME/Tox Process Through People, Technology and Orchestration: This presentation will introduce LeadStream, the world’s first fully integrated turn-key ADME-Tox system designed to increase throughput and data quality.
  • Decrease Maintenance Costs and Increase Productivity – From Industry Service Experts: This presentation will cover a number of actual customer case studies highlighting support plans, educational services and managed maintenance programs.
  • Looking Closer at Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Processes – Implementing Process Analytical Technology (PAT): This presentation will review the entire process of implementing PAT, including strategy, instrumentation, process interfacing, qualification, service and support.
  • Modern Tools for Improving Trace Chemical Analysis Workflow in Today’s Busy Laboratory: This presentation will explore the tradeoffs between balancing speed, sensitivity and specificity in trace chemical analysis and will discuss relevant industry advancements.

In addition, the following Informatics presentations will also be featured in the Discovery Theater:

  • Understanding Pharmaceutical Workflows in Data Management Software
