Thermo Electron Delivers SampleManager 2003 LIMS

The highlights of the new version include major functional enhancements to the SampleManager SQC (Statistical Quality Control) and Stability modules. A host of new features have also been incorporated to ease general system administration and to improve a user’s ability to review data when it is needed. Best known for its market leading LIMS products (SampleManager™ and Nautilus™), chromatography data system solution (Atlas™) and data archival and knowledge management solution (eRecordManager™), Thermo’s informatics business was formerly known as Thermo LabSystems and Thermo Galactic.

Statistical quality control is essential in the day to day running of industrial processes and has a key role in optimizing productivity. The SampleManager SQC module provides the power and flexibility to monitor all laboratory data over time. Trend analysis is also incorporated to provide advanced warning that a process may be out of statistical control. The latest enhancements to the SampleManager SQC module include:

  • Improved access to underlying data in a chart. Via a single mouse-click on a point in an SQC chart, a user is able to display data such as sample, test, result or other related information.
  • Users are able to exclude ‘bad points’ from a chart or add comments to a specific point. Such changes will be dynamically updated in the database for auditing purposes.
  • Improved ease of navigation for SQC chart data selection.

Establishing the stability of pharmaceuticals and foodstuffs under anticipated storage conditions is a vital step towards approving a product for consumer use. Designed to facilitate the creation and management of stability studies, enhancements to the Stability module in SampleManager 2003 include:

  • New powerful inventory functionality. This new sub-module offers users a flexible and easy to use solution for monitoring and controlling stock levels of raw materials, in-process and finished products. Users now have easier and more comprehensive access to related data for each sample.
  • Major update to matrix screens in Stability allows users to benefit fully from the latest core SampleManager features.

Further new developments in SampleManager 2003 include enhancements to report management, new ad hoc browsing capability and a new feature that allows role-based submission for inspection and authorization of items (samples, tests, analyses, etc) by a specific group of individuals, rather than a single user.

With an installed base of over 1,100 systems and around 45,000 daily users worldwide, SampleManager is one of the most established and industrially robust LIMS on the market. The solution is designed to support laboratory operations and integrate those operations into the corporate enterprise. Industries served include manufacturing, chemicals and process, pharmaceutical, food and beverages, water and environmental.
